NCCCO Approves 3,000th Practical Exam Test Site

January 2012 - In October, NCCCO’s nationally accredited certification program passed another milestone when the 3,000th practical test site was approved for testing.

Since 1999, when the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) first added practical tests to its CCO crane operator certification exams, test site applications have been received from locations across the country to administer CCO practical examinations. Many of these sites have several cranes approved for testing, bringing the total number of cranes approved for use on CCO practical tests to more than 8,600.

Because of the wide variety of cranes used for practical tests, NCCCO has developed custom test site layout CAD drawings for most of these sites to reflect the crane and configuration used.

The vast majority of tests administered use telescopic boom mobile cranes (see chart). Not surprisingly, most cranes are registered to sites in California, arguably the most populous crane state which has required crane operators to be certified since 2005. Texas is a fairly distant second, followed by South Carolina, Washington, Pennsylvania, and Florida,
